1683) Meredith Pinxton Snyder

Meredith Pinxton Snyder (1859 – 1937). California property owner and businessman, who was mayor of Los Angeles on three occasions from 1896 through 1921, and was also on the California Industrial Accident Commission.
He was a Mason and an Elk and a member of the Jonathan Club, the Los Angeles Country Club, the Lomita Gun Club, the Knights of Pythias and the Knights Templar.

1663) Rodolphe Salis

Louis Rodolphe Salis (1851 – 1897). Creator, host and owner of the Le Chat Noir ('The Black Cat') cabaret in the Montmartre district of Paris. With this establishment, Salis is remembered as the creator of the modern cabaret: a nightclub where the patrons could sit at tables with alcoholic drinks and enjoy variety acts on a stage, introduced by a master of ceremonies who interacted with the audience.

1625) Clive Sinclair

Sir Clive Sinclair (July 1940 - September 2021). English inventor. Perhaps most famous for the much-loved Sinclair Spectrum home computer. He was also an early pioneer of electric vehicles with his Sinclair C5.

After spending several years as assistant editor of Instrument Practice, Sinclair founded Sinclair Radionics Ltd in 1961. He produced the world's first slimline electronic pocket calculator (the Sinclair Executive) in 1972. Sinclair then moved into the production of home computers in 1980 with Sinclair Research Ltd, producing the Sinclair ZX80 (the UK's first mass-market home computer for less than £100) and in the early 1980s, the ZX81, ZX Spectrum and the Sinclair QL. Sinclair Research is widely recognised for its importance in the early days of the British and European home computer industry, as well as helping to give rise to the British video game industry.
Sinclair also had several commercial failures, including the Sinclair Radionics Black Watch wristwatch, the Sinclair Vehicles C5 battery electric vehicle, and the Sinclair Research TV80 flatscreen CRT handheld television set. The failure of the C5, along with a weakened computer market, forced Sinclair to sell most of his companies by 1986. Through 2010, Sinclair concentrated on personal transport, including the A-bike, a folding bicycle for commuters which was small enough to fit in a handbag. He also developed the Sinclair X-1, a revised version of the C5 electric vehicle, which never made it to the market.
Sinclair was appointed Knight Bachelor in the 1983 Birthday Honours for his contributions to the personal computer industry in the UK.

1478) Henry du Pont

Henry du Pont (1812 – 1889). American military officer and businessman from Delaware, and a member of the Du Pont family.

He was the second son of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont and his wife, Sophie Madeleine Dalmas. E.I. du Pont was a French immigrant and gunpowder manufacturer who became the founder of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, a chemical company that is still in existence. Henry du Pont was educated at the American Classical and Military Academy in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from there in 1829 and enrolled at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. Du Pont graduated from West Point in 1833 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army.

When his father died in 1834, du Pont worked with his brother, Alfred, and his brother-in-law, Jacques Antoine Bidermann, in managing the company. In 1837, he married Louisa Gerhard, with whom he would have nine children, including a son, Henry A. du Pont, the future United States Senator. In 1850, Alfred retired from the family business and Henry du Pont became the head of the firm, which by that time had been joined by his younger brother, Alexis, and his nephew, Lammot.

1409) Allan Lockheed

Allan Haines Lockheed (né Allan Haines Loughead; 1889 – 1969). American aviation engineer and business man. He formed the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company along with his brother, Malcolm Loughead, that became Lockheed Corporation.

Loughead legally changed his name to Allan Lockheed, the phonetic spelling of his family name to avoid spelling confusion, in 1934. After World War II, he continued his career as a real estate salesman while occasionally serving as an aviation consultant.

1378) Isaac Singer

Isaac Merritt Singer (1811 – 1875). American inventor, actor, and businessman. He made important improvements in the design of the sewing machine and was the founder of what became one of the first American multi-national businesses, the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Many others, including Walter Hunt and Elias Howe, had patented sewing machines before Singer, but his success was based on the practicality of his machine, the ease with which it could be adapted to home use and its availability on an installments payment basis. Singer died in 1875, a millionaire dividing his $13 million fortune unequally among 20 of his living children by his wives and various mistresses. Altogether he fathered 24 children.

Thomas Alva Edison (1847 – 1931). American inventor and businessman who has been described as America's greatest inventor. He developed many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures. Adriano Olivetti (1901 - 1960). Italian engineer, politician and industrialist whose entrepreneurial activity thrived on the idea that profit should be reinvested for the benefits of the whole society. He was son of the founder of Olivetti, Camillo Olivetti. Adriano Olivetti was known worldwide during his lifetime as the Italian manufacturer of Olivetti typewriters, calculators, and computers.
Olivetti was an entrepreneur and innovator who transformed shop-like operations into a modern factory. In and out of the factory, he both practiced and preached the utopian system of "the community movement," but he never managed to build a mass following. 1288) Ugo Veniero D'Annunzio

Ugo Veniero D'Annunzio (1887 – 1945). Italian-born American engineer and businessman.
He was the third child of Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio and Roman aristocrat Maria Hardouin di Gallese.
He graduated in mechanical engineering and, after WWI, was hired by automotive firm Isotta-Fraschini.
He moved to the US as representative of the firm and later became senior manager and vice-president of American Aeronautical Corporation of Enea Bossi. In 1930 he took US citizenship.

1270) Paul J. "Red" Dorfman

Paul J. "Red" Dorfman (1901–1971). Head of the Chicago Waste Handler's Union and kingpin in the Chicago Outfit, who in 1959 was described by Congressional investigators "as the link between the Teamsters Union and the Chicago underworld." In 1949, Red struck a deal with Jimmy Hoffa, then head of the Teamsters Union in Michigan. According to FBI files, Red agreed to introduce Hoffa to mob figures in exchange for his son Allen's entry into the Teamsters' insurance business.
Red Dorfman had troubles with the AFL-CIO when he was caught taking funds out of the labor union's health and welfare fund, and, among other things, paying personal bills with the membership's money. Paul Dorfman was one of only two trustees on the fund. In addition, he had deposited $150,000 of health and welfare money with a bank owned by a friend, George Sax, who did not pay interest. Sax was the owner of the Saxony Motel in Miami, Florida, which was a meeting place for Hoffa, Dorfman, Robert Shulman and others when they were visiting South Florida.
He married Rose Ritman (1907–2003). His son (or stepson) Allen was portrayed by Jake Hoffman in the 2019 Martin Scorsese film The Irishman.

1196) Harriet Hubbard Ayer

Harriet Hubbard Ayer (1849 – 1903). American cosmetics entrepreneur and journalist.
In 1886, she launched Recamier Toilet Preparations, Inc., which she managed and marketed by incorporating her own name on the label and writing strategic, innovative advertising copy. Her products included creams, balms, scents, brushes, soaps and more which brought in over one million dollars a year. She used much of her earnings for interesting advertisements, paid endorsements by famous entertainers, and for advertorials.
Between 1887 and 1893, at the height of her career as the head of her cosmetics company, Blanche Howard, a finishing school mistress in Stuttgart, Germany, turned Ayer's daughters, who were enrolled there, against her. Ayer was publicly accused of scandalous behavior in five lawsuits in 1889, which were broadcast weekly in the newspapers. In her attempt to regain control over her children, she was drugged and isolated and eventually institutionalized in 1893 by her former husband, Herbert Copeland Ayer.
It took fourteen months for her to escape from the Bronxville Insane Asylum. While recovering from her ordeal and to regain the respect of her daughters and the community, Ayer gave dramatic lectures in 1895 documenting the intolerable conditions in asylums. Her career as a journalist commenced a year later, when in 1896 she was hired by the New York World to write and edit their new weekly woman’s section.
When she died, she was the highest paid female journalist in the United States and was receiving 20,000 letters a year.

Henry Robinson Luce (1898 – 1967). American magazine magnate who was called "the most influential private citizen in the America of his day". He launched and closely supervised a stable of magazines that transformed journalism and the reading habits of millions of Americans. Time summarized and interpreted the week's news; Life was a picture magazine of politics, culture, and society that dominated American visual perceptions in the era before television; Fortune reported on national and international business; and Sports Illustrated explored the world of sports. Counting his radio projects and newsreels, Luce created the first multimedia corporation. He envisaged that the United States would achieve world hegemony, and, in 1941, he declared the 20th century would be the "American Century".

1087) Isidore Miller

Isidore Miller (1884 - 1966). Father of the Pulitzer Prize winning American playwright and essayist, Arthur Asher Miller, who became the final husband of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe. Isidore's youngest child became the famous actress Joan Copeland.
He was born in Radomyśl Wielki, Galicia (then part of Austria-Hungary, now Poland) in a Jewish family and emigrated to the US in 1891. In 1918 he started a women's clothing manufacturing business in Harlem, employing 400 people, but they lost almost everything in the crash of 1929.

1058) Norman Alexander "Red "Dutton

Norman Alexander Dutton (1897 – 1987). Canadian ice hockey player, coach and executive. Commonly known as Red Dutton, and earlier by the nickname "Mervyn", he played for the Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) and the Montreal Maroons and New York Americans of the National Hockey League (NHL). A rugged and physical defenceman, Dutton often led his team in penalty minutes, won the WCHL championship in 1924 as a member of the Tigers and was twice named a WCHL All-Star.
A successful businessman, Dutton operated a construction company that built Calgary's McMahon Stadium in 1960 and he served for a time as the president of the Calgary Stampeders football club and later the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. He was invested as a member of the Order of Canada in 1981 and is honoured by both the Manitoba Hockey and Alberta Sports Halls of Fame. He was posthumously awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1993 in recognition of his contributions to the game of hockey in the United States.

1000) James Sprunt

James Sprunt (1846 - 1924). Scottish-born Cape Fear exporter, historian and philanthropist.
In 1854 he emigrated with his family from Glasgow to Wilmington, North Carolina.
He joined his father in the exportation of cotton and naval stores. More than fifty agencies were established overseas in England, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, and Italy. When his father died in 1884, James succeeded him as British vice-consul. For five years (1907–12) he was also Imperial German Counsel.
Aside from his extensive philanthropies, he is perhaps best remembered as Wilmington's most dedicated citizen for the preservation of the historical facts and legends of the Cape Fear region.

989) Corina Kavanagh

Corina Kavanagh de Ham, née Corina Kavanagh Lynch (1890 - 1984). Eldest child of John Patrick Kavanagh Machierman (1863-1922) and his wife Elisa Lynch Byrne. Her parents had emigrated from Ireland to Argentina, where they became prosperous landowners.
Her name is closely associated with her financing the building of the Kavanagh Tower in central Buenos Aires, a 120-metre-high residential block comprising 105 luxury apartments on twenty-nine floors. The construction of the Kavanagh Building took only fourteen months and was completed in 1936. It was at the time the highest reinforced concrete structure in the world and was the tallest building in South America for many years. South America’s first skyscraper, it has been described as a hybrid of the Modernist and Art Deco styles.

941) Colleen Moore

Colleen Moore (born Kathleen Morrison; 1899 – 1988). American film actress who began her career during the silent film era. Moore became one of the most fashionable (and highly-paid) stars of the era and helped popularize the bobbed haircut.
A huge star in her day, approximately half of Moore's films are now considered lost, including her first talking picture from 1929. What was perhaps her most celebrated film, Flaming Youth (1923), is now mostly lost as well, with only one reel surviving.
Moore took a brief hiatus from acting between 1929 and 1933, just as sound was being added to motion pictures. After the hiatus, her four sound pictures released in 1933 and 1934 were not financial successes. Moore then retired permanently from screen acting.
After her film career, Moore maintained her wealth through astute investments, becoming a partner in the investment firm Merrill Lynch. She later wrote a "how-to" book about investing in the stock market.
Moore also nurtured a passion for dollhouses throughout her life and helped design and curate The Colleen Moore Dollhouse, which has been a featured exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois since the early 1950s. The dollhouse, measuring 9 square feet (0.84 m2), was estimated in 1985 to be worth of $7 million, and it is seen by 1.5 million people annually.

Henry Churchill de Mille (1853 – 1893). American businessman and Georgist, father of film pioneers Cecil B. de Mille and William C. de Mille, and paternal grandfather of the dancer and choreographer Agnes de Mille. He was also father-in-law of Anna George.
