53) Pánfilo de Narváez
Pánfilo
de Narváez (1470 (or '78) –1528). Spanish conquistador and soldier in
the Americas. Born in Spain, he first embarked to Jamaica in 1510 as a
soldier. He came to participate in the conquest of Cuba and led an
expedition to Camagüey escorting Bartolomé de las Casas. Las Casas
described him as exceedingly cruel towards the natives.
- "Crowned with red hair, all the evidence suggests that Panfilo de Narváez was a true sociopath." http://floridamaritime.org/floridafrontier/?page_id=1466
- "This tall, fat, one-eyed conquistador with his flaming red hair and
beard, ruddy face and booming voice - which sounded, one chronicler
says, like it came from a deep cave - must have made a vivid impression
on Cabeza de Vaca." https://books.google.it
