James Vincent Sheean (1899 – 1975). American journalist and novelist.
Sheean's most famous work was Personal History (New York: Doubleday, 1935). It won one of the inaugural National Book Awards: the Most Distinguished Biography of 1935. Film producer Walter Wanger acquired the political memoir and made it the basis for his 1940 film production Foreign Correspondent, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
He served as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune during the Spanish Civil War and managed to be present at some of the most important events of that time. He toured China, where he met Madam Sun Yatsen during the early days of the Communist revolution, and Rayna Prohme, a member of the American Communist Party, and they crossed the Soviet Union, where he sympathetically witnessed the unfolding of Bolshevism. Sheean saw the Palestinian uprising in Jerusalem in 1929, as well as later the German reoccupation of the Ruhr Valley and the Italian conquest of Ethiopia.
He translated Ève Curie's biography of her mother, Madame Curie (1939), into English and wrote a controversial biography of Dorothy Thompson and Sinclair Lewis, Dorothy and Red (1963).

Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin ( 1888 – 1938). Bolshevik revolutionary, Soviet Union politician and prolific author on revolutionary theory.
As a young man, he spent six years in exile working closely with fellow exiles Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky. After the revolution of February 1917, he returned to Moscow, where his Bolshevik credentials earned him a high rank in the Bolshevik party and after the October Revolution became editor of the party newspaper Pravda.
When the Great Purge began in 1936, Stalin looked for any pretext to liquidate his former allies and rivals for power and some of Bukharin's letters, conversations and tapped phone-calls indicated disloyalty. Arrested in February 1937, he was charged with conspiring to overthrow the Soviet state. After a show trial that alienated many Western communist sympathisers, he was executed in March 1938.

Rudolf Slánský (1901 – 1952). Czech Communist politician. Holding the post of the party's General Secretary after World War II, he was one of the leading creators and organizers of Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. After the split between Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia and Soviet premier Joseph Stalin, the latter instigated a wave of "purges" of the respective Communist Party leaderships, to prevent more splits between the Soviet Union and its Central European "satellite" countries. In Czechoslovakia, Slánský was one of 14 leaders arrested in 1951 and put on show trial en masse in November 1952, charged with high treason. After eight days, 11 of the 14 were sentenced to death. Slánský's sentence was carried out five days later.
