1659) Silvio Furlani

Silvio Furlani (1921 - 2001). Italian librarian and historian.
Born of an Italian father and an Austrian mother, he attended primary school in Graz and continued his studies in Italy, first in Vicenza and then in Teramo. In 1946 he graduated with honours in Letters and Philosophy at 'La Sapienza' University.
In 1947, he won the competition for titles and examinations announced by the Constituent Assembly, for a post as secretary of the Library of the Chamber of Deputies, and contributed to the reorganisation of the institute during Umberto Collamarini's provisional directorship, until Furlani himself became director.
In the course of his career, in addition to studying librarianship, he worked on parliamentary history and electoral history.

"Normalista' is anyone who studies or graduated at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. This nickname was given to Furlani by mistake, since he did study in Pisa, but at the university's Faculty of Letters, not at the Scuola Normale.

 

 

1329) William Kirkpatrick Magee

William Kirkpatrick Magee (1868 – 1961). Irish author, editor and librarian, who as an essayist and poet adopted the pen-name of John Eglinton. He became head librarian of the National Library of Ireland, after opposing the "cultural nationalism" of his time. From 1904 to 1905 he edited the literary journal Dana and was the biographer of George William Russell.

1092) Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh

Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh (1853–1935). American explorer.
An explorer of the American West at an early age, he was a member of an expedition that discovered the last unknown river in the United States, the Escalante River and the previously undiscovered Henry Mountains.
From 1871 to 1873, he was artist and assistant topographer with Major Powell's second expedition down the Colorado River. He joined the 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition financed by railroad magnate E. H. Harriman. He served as librarian of the American Geographical Society (1909–1911) and became a fellow of the American Ethnological Society. He helped to found the Explorers Club in 1904.

840) George Herbert Putnam

George Herbert Putnam (1861 – 1955). American librarian. He was the eighth (and also the longest-serving) Librarian of Congress from 1899 to 1939. He implemented his vision of a universal collection with strengths in every language, especially from Europe and Latin America.
His father, George Palmer Putnam, was the founder of a well known publishing house, known previously as the Putnam Publishing house, but now known as G. P. Putnam's Sons.
