1226) Mary Beth Hughes

Mary Elizabeth Hughes (1919 – 1995). American film, television, and stage actress best known for her roles in B movies.
In 1940 she was offered a contract with 20th Century-Fox. Later that year she landed a role opposite John Barrymore in The Great Profile, a part she later noted as one of her favorites. Fox did not renew her contract when it expired in 1943 and the following year she began appearing in a nightclub act and soon signed a three-picture deal with Universal Pictures.
Her most famous role was as Henry Fonda's former girlfriend in the Best Picture Academy Award nominee The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). Throughout the mid-1940s and early 1950s, Hughes appeared in film and television roles, including the cult classic I Accuse My Parents, Anthony Mann's early noir masterpiece The Great Flamarion, where she co-starred with Erich von Stroheim and Dan Duryea, Wanted: Dead or Alive (episode "Secret Ballot"), The Devil's Henchman, The Abbott and Costello Show, Dragnet and Studio One.

1225) Carmen Gaudin

Carmen Gaudin. French prostitute who modeled for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901), including some of his most famous paintings. Lautrec met Gaudin in 1884 when he spied her and her brilliant red hair while dining in Montmartre with Henri Rachou, his friend and fellow student at Cormon’s atelier. Until the late 1880s Carmen was to sit for Lautrec for at least 13 paintings, as well as some drawings.

1224) Francis Brooks Chadwick

Francis Brooks Chadwick (1850–1942/43). American painter active in France.
He was born in Boston and studied at Harvard, and to pursue his interest in art he attended the Académie Julian in Paris. He was friends with the painter John Singer Sargent and travelled with him to Haarlem in 1880. The following year he married the Swedish painter Emma Löwstädt-Chadwick and they settled in Grez-sur-Loing, where he remained the rest of his life, though the couple travelled to other summer art colonies on vacation.

1223) Josephine Hutchinson

Josephine Hutchinson (1903 – 1998). American actress.
At Universal, she played Elsa von Frankenstein in one of her more memorable roles alongside actor Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff in Son of Frankenstein (1939). She later played Mrs. Townsend in North by Northwest (1959) and Mrs. Macaboy in Love Is Better Than Ever, starring Elizabeth Taylor.
She also worked in Broadway and on television.
Her mother, Leona Roberts, was an actress best known for her role as Mrs. Meade in Gone with the Wind.

1222) Dorothy Tennant, Lady Stanley

Dorothy Tennant (1855 – 1926). English painter of the Victorian era neoclassicism.
She studied painting under Edward Poynter at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and with Jean-Jacques Henner in Paris. She first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 and subsequently at the New Gallery and the Grosvenor Gallery in London. Outside of London Tennant featured in exhibitions by the Fine Art Society in Glasgow and also in the Autumn Exhibitions held in Liverpool and Manchester.
She modeled for several painters, such as Jean-Jacques Henner, George Frederick Watts and John Everett Millais.
In 1890, she married the explorer of Africa Henry Morton Stanley and became known as Lady Stanley.
After Stanley's death, she married, in 1907, Henry Jones Curtis, a pathologist, surgeon and writer.
Her sister was the photographer Eveleen Tennant Myers.

1221) Frances Leyland

Frances Leyland (née Dawson,1834–1910). Wife of British shipowner Frederick Richards Leyland. They married in 1855, but separated in 1879.
Frederick Leyland was also a major art collector, who commissioned works from several of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painters.
Frances modeled for the Symphony in Flesh Colour and Pink: Portrait of Frances Leyland (1871–1874), by James McNeill Whistler, and for Monna Rosa, by D. G. Rossetti. This is actually the title of two oil paintings: the earlier and smaller painting was completed in 1862 and its whereabouts is now unknown; the second was completed in 1867 and is now in a private collection. Frederick Leyland displayed the larger painting in his drawing room with five other Rossetti "stunners."

1220) Hazel Brooks

Hazel Brooks (1924 – 2002). American actress.
The daughter of a sea captain, Brooks was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Her father died when she was three years old, and she moved with her mother to Brooklyn, New York.
Brooks became a model for Harry Conover when she was 16. A talent scout picked her and five other models to appear in the film Du Barry Was a Lady (1943). She made a series of pictures at the studio during the 1940s, culminating with a lead role in 1947 Body and Soul with John Garfield.
She had captured almost as much attention three years earlier in 1944 when, at age 19, she married the long-time head of her studio's fabled art department, Cedric Gibbons, then 49. The wedding occurred on October 25, 1944. Although the age difference inspired a certain amount of winking in the gossip columns at the time, the marriage proved a strong one and lasted until Gibbons' death in 1960. Brooks subsequently married Dr. Rex Ross (1908-1999), a surgeon and founder of the Non-invasive Vascular Clinic at Hollywood Hospital.
In the years after her retirement from films, she became a skilled still photographer. She also worked actively for a number of children's charities.
