71) Giovanni Carmelo Verga

Giovanni Carmelo Verga (1840 – 1922). Italian realist (Verismo) writer, best known for his depictions of life in his native Sicily, and especially for the short story (and later play) Cavalleria Rusticana and the novel I Malavoglia (The House by the Medlar Tree). He's also the author of the short story "Rosso Malpelo".

- "In appearance, he was of medium height, strong and straight, with thick white hair, and proud dark eyes, and a big reddish moustache: a striking man to look at." https://gutenberg.ca/ebooks/verga-littlenovels/verga-littlenovels-00-h.html
